Spicebush is a charming native shrub with aromatic leaves and twigs that release a spicy scent when crushed. In early spring, it boasts clusters of tiny yellow flowers, adding a splash of color to the landscape. As autumn approaches, its leaves turn a vibrant yellow, and bright red berries appear, attracting birds and wildlife.

Plant spicebush in early spring or fall in well-drained, moist soil with partial to full shade. Space plants 6-12 feet apart. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil consistently moist. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches. Spicebush is dioecious, so plant both male and female plants for fruit production.
