White Bleeding Heart

Plant in spring or fall in moist, humus-rich soil in a shaded or partially shaded location, spacing 18–24 inches apart. White bleeding heart produces graceful, arching stems of pure white, heart-shaped flowers in spring. Incorporate compost into the planting area and water well. Mulch to retain moisture. Avoid hot, dry, or fully exposed sites.

Keep soil consistently moist in spring during active growth and flowering. White bleeding heart typically goes dormant in midsummer heat — this is normal behavior, not a sign of disease. Plant alongside summer-blooming perennials to fill the gap during dormancy. Divide every three to four years in early spring. All parts are toxic if ingested. The pure white flowers are elegant and classic in the spring shade garden.
