Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist to dry, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly. This fern is remarkably adaptable to dry shade.

Care Tips

Water consistently after planting; once established it is one of the most drought-tolerant ferns available and adapts well to dry shade where few other ferns survive. It spreads by rhizomes to form a naturalistic groundcover over time- divide in spring to control spread if needed. Remove old or tattered fronds in early spring before new growth emerges. No fertilization generally needed. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. The delicate, finely divided fronds emit a pleasant hay-like scent when brushed or crushed.
