Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist to average, well-drained soil. Space 15–18 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This native grass adapts well to shade and a range of soil conditions.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it tolerates moderate drought in shade. Cut back to a few inches in early spring before new growth emerges. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. No fertilization generally needed. Largely pest-free. The distinctive, bristle-like seed heads give this grass its common name and are particularly ornamental in late summer and fall. One of the best native grasses for shaded conditions, where it provides excellent fine texture and movement in the woodland garden.
