Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil, spacing 6–8 feet apart. Oakleaf hydrangea is a native shrub that adapts well to partial shade and average garden soils. Dig a generous planting hole, amend with compost, and water deeply. Mulch 3 inches deep to retain moisture. Avoid hot, dry, or exposed sites — this hydrangea performs best with protection from harsh afternoon sun.

Care Tips

Prune lightly right after bloom in late summer if shaping is needed — Alice blooms on old wood, so avoid cutting back in late fall or early spring, which removes next year's flower buds. The large, white cone-shaped flower heads age to a beautiful parchment color and remain attractive through fall. Exfoliating cinnamon-brown bark provides striking winter interest. Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer.
