Pairs well with

Snow Queen is the oakleaf hydrangea for a large space. Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snow Queen' reaches 4 to 6 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, and the flower panicles stand upright rather than nodding, which is the difference between this selection and the species. It grows in part shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8, and takes three or four seasons to reach full size.

The panicles are large and densely packed, opening pure white in early summer and aging to pink and then tan as the season goes on. They hold their shape well enough to dry on the plant and stand through winter.

The foliage is deeply lobed and oak-shaped, dark green through summer, turning deep red-bronze in fall and holding late. Older stems peel in cinnamon-colored strips, which gives the plant winter presence after the leaves drop.

Oakleaf hydrangea is native to the Southeast and handles more sun and more drought than the bigleaf types once established, though it wants steady moisture through the first year or two. It flowers on old wood, so the buds form the previous summer and hard pruning in spring will cost you the display. The small fertile flowers tucked under the showy ones draw bees through the bloom season.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Space 6–8 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep.

Care Tips

Water consistently, especially during the first season and dry periods. Oakleaf hydrangea blooms on old wood- prune only lightly immediately after flowering to remove spent blooms, and avoid any heavy pruning in fall or early spring which removes next year's flower buds. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. The large white flower panicles, attractive peeling bark, and brilliant fall foliage color make this a superb four-season native shrub. Largely pest-free.
