White at the top, pink through the middle and strawberry red at the base, the panicles on this large panicle hydrangea carry all three colors on the same flower head at once. Hydrangea paniculata Vanilla Strawberry™ 'Renhy' grows 6 to 7 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8.

Creamy white panicles open in midsummer and begin coloring from the base within a couple of weeks. New panicles keep opening white while older ones deepen to red, so a mature plant carries the full range from August onward.

Panicle hydrangea, Hydrangea paniculata, takes more sun than any other common hydrangea and flowers on new wood from midsummer into fall. Buds form in spring on the current year's growth, so a hard winter or a late frost does not cost it a season of bloom, and soil pH has no effect on the color.

Most panicle hydrangeas open white or green and age to pink or red. That change is driven by cool nights, so northern gardens color up strongly while warmer southern gardens tend to hold cream and soft blush instead. Cut back by about a third in late winter or early spring. Panicle hydrangeas take average soil as long as it drains, and once established they handle dry spells better than the other hydrangea groups.

The dark red branches show against the flowers and stand out in winter after the leaves drop. At this size it works as a hedge, a screen, or a specimen.

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 6–8 feet apart to allow room for its mature size. Choose a site with fertile, well-drained soil. Dig a generous planting hole, amend with compost, and water deeply after planting. Mulch 3 inches deep around the base. Keep well watered during the first full growing season.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently through the season. Blooms on new wood. Cut back by about one-third in late winter or early spring, before growth starts. This annual pruning drives the strong new stems that carry the largest flower heads. Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer. Cut stems back by one-third to one-half to promote strong new growth and large flower heads. No deadheading is necessary — the blooms age beautifully from white to pink to deep rose and remain attractive through fall.
