Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in a sheltered woodland-style setting with acidic, moist, well-drained soil. Test soil pH and amend with peat or sulfur if needed. Dig a wide, shallow planting hole and set the root ball at or just above grade. Mulch deeply with pine bark or shredded leaves to keep roots cool and moist. Water thoroughly at planting.

Care Tips

Sarah is prized for its striking red buds, which open to pink flowers — deadhead after bloom to keep the plant tidy and encourage better bud set for the following year. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Water during dry spells. Avoid fertilizing after midsummer, which can promote tender new growth vulnerable to winter damage.
