Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist to wet, average to fertile soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Swamp milkweed is highly adaptable and also grows well in average garden soil.

Care Tips

Water consistently- swamp milkweed prefers moist conditions but is more adaptable than its name suggests and tolerates average garden soil well once established. Deadhead spent flower clusters to encourage continued bloom. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Largely pest-free except for occasional aphid colonies on new growth- these are typically handled by beneficial insects naturally. The white flowers are excellent for monarch butterflies and all pollinators.
