Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained to dry soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Butterfly milkweed has a deep taproot and strongly resents being moved- choose a permanent location.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season to establish; once established it is highly drought tolerant and actually prefers lean, dry conditions. Do not fertilize- lean soil produces the best, most compact growth. Butterfly milkweed is slow to emerge in spring- mark its location carefully to avoid disturbing it. Cut back dead stems in early spring. Do not divide or transplant once established. The vivid orange flowers are essential food for monarch butterfly larvae. Largely pest-free and deer resistant.
