Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained to dry soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Butterfly milkweed has a deep taproot- choose a permanent location.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Do not fertilize. Mark its location carefully- butterfly milkweed emerges very late in spring and can be accidentally disturbed. Cut back dead stems in early spring. Do not divide or transplant. Gay Butterflies produces a mix of red, orange, and yellow flowers from the same planting- a vivid, multi-toned display that is stunning and irresistible to monarch butterflies and other pollinators. Largely pest-free and deer resistant.
