Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Highly adaptable to clay and a wide range of soils.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it tolerates moderate drought. Pinch stem tips back once or twice in late spring to encourage a compact, well-branched plant with more flower heads in fall and reduce the need for staking. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 2–3 years in spring. Watch for aster yellows- distorted growth indicates infection; remove and discard affected plants. The vivid purple-pink flowers in fall are exceptional for pollinators. Largely otherwise pest-free.
