Blush pink flowers with a sweet clove fragrance open in mid to late spring, carried in clusters on narrow trumpet-shaped blooms with long protruding stamens. Rhododendron viscosum 'Pink and Sweet' grows 5 to 7 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.
The fragrance carries well beyond the plant, which is the main reason people grow swamp azaleas. A position near a path or a doorway makes the most of it.
Swamp azalea grows wild in bogs and along stream edges, so it takes wet ground and even standing water, and it also does well in ordinary garden soil that stays moist.
This is a deciduous azalea, so the leaves drop in fall after turning bronze to purple. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, since alkaline ground turns the foliage yellow.
