Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space 20–30 feet apart or plant in multi-stem clumps for the most dramatic effect. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch well away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly, especially during the first 2–3 seasons and dry periods. Paper birch performs best in cool, moist climates- it struggles in hot, dry conditions in the South. Monitor for bronze birch borer- a serious pest; keeping trees healthy and well-watered is the best prevention. The striking, peeling white bark is most dramatic on mature trees and clump forms. Little pruning is needed- remove dead branches in late fall. A stunning ornamental native tree best suited to northern and cooler climates.
