Pairs well with

Carolina rose is a native shrub rose that spreads into a thicket, which makes it a hedgerow or bank planting rather than a specimen for a bed. Rosa carolina grows anywhere from 1 to 5 feet tall and wide depending on conditions, in full sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 9.

Fragrant single pink flowers with gold centers open in early summer, followed by red hips that hold into winter and feed songbirds. Bees come to the open flowers for pollen through the bloom, and the foliage feeds several hairstreak and fritillary caterpillars.

Fall foliage turns yellow through red, and the low arching canes hold their shape through the cold months.

Carolina rose adapts to poor, dry, sandy, and rocky ground, which is why it grows wild along roadsides and field edges across most of the eastern half of the country. It needs no spray program. The canes carry slender prickles and it spreads to fill space, so give it a site where running is welcome.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

I just received my hypericum red fame and was amazed how big it was and just as pretty as my established one I have had a couple years. So happy because the last one I ordered online from another nursery came as a little stub compared to this! I will definitely use Spotswood Greenery for now on!

Wonderful

Wonderful

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Comfortable ordering process

The information and accuracy of the description of the ordered plants was great. The ability to search for specific plants was nice. Could search for terms not pre-defined and still came up with relevant specimens.

The online ordering process went smoothly.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average, well-drained soil. Space 3–5 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly.

Care Tips

Plant in full sun. Part sun is fine, with fewer flowers.
These roses handle poor, sandy soil. Rugosas also take salt spray, and the native species handle moist to dry ground.
Water through the first summer; established plants handle drought.
Feed little or not at all. Rugosas in particular grow best without fertilizer.
Do not spray rugosa roses with fungicides or oils; their leaves damage easily.
Leave spent flowers in place so hips form. The hips color in late summer and fall and hang on into winter.
Prune in late winter. Every few years, remove the oldest canes at the base to renew the plant.
Plants spread by suckers into a thicket. Remove suckers at the edges to keep the patch in bounds.
Japanese beetles can strip flowers and leaves in midsummer. Hand-pick them into soapy water early in the day.
Rose rosette disease causes red, bristly, distorted new shoots. Remove and destroy an affected plant, roots and all; it does not recover.
