Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained to wet soil. Highly adaptable to clay and poorly drained conditions. Space 6–8 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep.

Care Tips

Water consistently after planting; very tolerant of wet conditions once established. For the best winter stem color, cut one-third of the oldest, darkest stems to the ground each late winter or early spring, as young stems display the most attractive gray color. Alternatively, cut the entire shrub back hard every 2–3 years to rejuvenate fully. Fertilize lightly in spring. The gray-toned stems provide subtle but beautiful winter interest as a companion to red or yellow twig dogwood.
