Cutleaf Coneflower

American Beauties Native Plants®

Cutleaf coneflower gets tall, anywhere from 2 to 9 feet depending on conditions, with yellow petals that hang back from a green center cone. Rudbeckia laciniata is a native perennial spreading 18 to 36 inches wide in full sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 9.

Bloom comes in late summer and runs into fall, held well above the foliage on branching stems. The deeply lobed leaves are the source of the name and give the plant a coarse texture through the season.

Height is the thing to plan for. In moist rich ground this reaches the top of its range and needs a back-of-border position or something behind it to lean on. In leaner, drier soil it stays shorter.

It grows wild in wet meadows, along streams, and in moist woodland edges, so it takes wet ground and part shade better than most rudbeckias. It spreads by rhizome into a colony over time. Bees and butterflies come to the flowers, and goldfinches take the seed through winter.

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting Tips

Plant in average to moist, well-drained soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care Tips

Plant in full sun to part shade.
Plant in moist to average soil. These handle wet ground and clay.
Water during dry spells; the leaves wilt quickly in drought.
Feed lightly, if at all. Rich soil makes the stems taller and more likely to flop.
Tall stems may need support. Cutting them back by half in late spring gives a shorter plant that flowers a little later.
Plants spread by underground stems into a large patch. Remove shoots at the edges in spring to keep it in bounds.
Remove spent flowers for more bloom, or leave the seed heads; goldfinches and other seed-eating birds feed on them.
Cut stems to the ground in late fall or early spring.
Divide every 3 to 4 years in spring.
Powdery mildew can show up in late summer. It is mostly cosmetic.
