Lynnhaven Carpet spreads into a dense mat of large fuzzy leaves that suppresses weeds and grows in dry shade, which very few groundcovers manage. Erigeron pulchellus var. pulchellus 'Lynnhaven Carpet' is a native perennial growing 12 to 15 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8.
Lavender-white daisies open on short stems in mid to late spring, held above the foliage. Bees and small butterflies come to them, and it is an early nectar source when little else has opened.
The leaves are soft, rounded, and semi-evergreen, holding through winter in the milder zones and forming a mat dense enough to shade out weeds.
This grows wild in dry woodlands and on wooded slopes, so it handles dry shade, root competition from mature trees, and poor soil. It spreads by runners into a broad patch. Deer leave it alone.
