Rattlesnake Master

Spotswood Greenery

Rattlesnake master is a native prairie perennial that looks like a yucca wandered into a meadow. Stiff, sword-shaped blue-green leaves edged with soft bristles rise from a basal rosette, and tall stalks carry spherical greenish-white flower heads from midsummer into early fall. Eryngium yuccifolium grows 3 to 5 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide in full sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 9.

The flower heads draw an unusual range of insects: small native bees, wasps, moths, and flies rather than the butterflies and bumblebees that visit most prairie plants. Xerces lists it as being of special value to native bees. It is also the only host plant for the rattlesnake master stem-borer moth, a rare specialist that cannot complete its life cycle without it.

The seedheads dry to a warm brown and stand through winter, holding their shape under snow. It self-sows freely, so cut the heads off after bloom if you want it to stay put.

This grows wild in tallgrass prairie, glades, and open rocky ground, so it wants full sun and well-drained soil. It puts down a deep taproot, which makes it drought-proof once established and difficult to move afterward. Rich ground makes it flop. Deer and rabbits leave it alone.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Wonderful

Wonderful

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Comfortable ordering process

The information and accuracy of the description of the ordered plants was great. The ability to search for specific plants was nice. Could search for terms not pre-defined and still came up with relevant specimens.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Tolerates clay and sandy soils. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This native prairie plant thrives in lean conditions- avoid rich or amended beds.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season to help establish the deep root system; once established it is highly drought tolerant and requires very little supplemental water. Do not fertilize- lean soil produces the best, most authentic growth. The architectural, globe-like flower heads atop spiky, blue-green foliage are unique and dramatic in the garden. Leave seed heads through fall and winter for wildlife and structure. Cut back dead foliage in early spring. Virtually pest-free and deer resistant.
