Dwarf Fothergilla

Spotswood Greenery

Fothergilla gives you three seasons out of one shrub. Fothergilla gardenii opens honey-scented white bottlebrush flowers before the leaves come out in spring, carries blue-green textured foliage through the whole summer, and finishes with a mix of yellow, orange, and red in fall. It grows 3 to 4 feet tall and wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8, and fills out over three or four seasons.

The flowers open in early to mid spring, held upright along bare stems, and the fragrance carries a few feet on a still day. They come out when little else is flowering and last a couple of weeks.

Summer is where most flowering shrubs go quiet, and this is where the foliage does the work. The leaves are ribbed and slightly puckered with scalloped edges, a soft blue-green, coarse enough in texture to hold a bed together next to fine-leaved plants. Fall color often shows all three tones on the same leaf and holds late.

Fothergilla is native to the Southeast and wants acidic, moist, well-drained soil with organic matter in it. Alkaline ground turns the leaves yellow and stalls the plant. It takes more sun in the north, which deepens the fall color, and it needs afternoon shade further south. Deer leave it alone, and it handles moderate salt.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Wonderful

Wonderful

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in acidic, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade to full sun, spacing 3–4 feet apart. Dwarf fothergilla is a native shrub with exceptionally outstanding multi-season interest: fragrant white bottlebrush flowers in early spring before the leaves emerge, attractive summer foliage, and absolutely spectacular orange, red, and yellow fall color. Incorporate compost and water well.

Care Tips

Minimal pruning is needed. Remove dead wood in early spring. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually. The fall foliage color of fothergilla is among the most brilliant of any native shrub — the combination of orange, red, and yellow on a single plant is extraordinary. Fragrant spring flowers and great fall color make dwarf fothergilla one of the most underused but rewarding native shrubs.
