Espresso carries coffee-brown foliage that holds its color all season, which makes the lavender-pink flowers read much more strongly against it than they do on the green-leaved wild form. This selection of the native Geranium maculatum grows 12 to 15 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.
Bloom comes in late spring and runs for several weeks. Bees come to the flowers, including specialists that use this species and few others.
The dark leaves are deeply cut and hold their bronze-chocolate tone from spring through fall rather than fading green in summer heat.
Wild geranium grows at woodland edges and in open woods, so this handles part shade and root competition, and takes more sun where soil stays moist. It stays lower and tighter than the species, which suits a front-of-border position or a woodland edge. Deer leave it alone.
