Blueberry Delight carries deep green needles with a silvery-blue underside, so the whole mat shimmers when wind turns the foliage. Juniperus communis var. depressa 'Amidak' is a selection of a native juniper, growing 18 to 24 inches tall and spreading 4 to 5 feet in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 7.
It produces blue berries heavily, more than most junipers, and they hold on the plant through winter. Birds take them, and they are the same berries used to flavor gin.
The habit is low and spreading, dense enough to hold a bank or cover a rough slope without weeding.
Junipers want full sun and sharp drainage, and this one handles drought, salt spray, and poor sandy soil once established. Wet ground is what kills them. Deer leave it alone. One thing to check before planting: Keep it away from apples, crabapples, and hawthorns, since junipers host cedar-apple rust.
