Pink Charm opens red buds into clear rich pink flowers, a straightforward strong pink without the banding the patterned selections carry. This selection of the native Kalmia latifolia grows 8 to 10 feet tall and wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.

Bloom comes in late spring in large clusters at the branch tips, and the crimped geometric buds are as good to look at as the open cups.

The foliage is glossy dark green and evergreen, holding a shade planting through winter when the deciduous shrubs around it have dropped.

Zone 4 hardiness puts this further north than most mountain laurels will grow. It wants acidic, moist, well-drained soil and struggles in heavy clay or alkaline ground. Mulch matters, since the roots sit shallow. Deer leave it alone.

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) with generous organic matter. Space 4–6 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep.

Care Tips

Plant in part shade to full sun. Plants flower best with some sun, and deep shade gives sparse blooms.
Plant in acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Mountain laurel does poorly in alkaline or heavy, wet soil.
Set the top of the root ball slightly above the soil surface, never below it.
Water deeply through the first two summers. Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep with pine bark or shredded leaves, keeping it back from the stems.
Feed lightly in spring, if at all, with a fertilizer for acid-loving plants.
Snap off spent flower clusters right after bloom for a tidier plant.
Prune lightly right after flowering. Next year's flower buds form in summer, so later pruning removes them.
Leaf spot can show up in wet years. Rake up and remove fallen leaves.
Lace bugs can stipple the leaves on plants in hot, sunny spots.
