Kalmia latifolia Raspberry Glow

Raspberry Glow sets masses of burgundy-red buds that open raspberry-pink in late May, so the shrub reads two-tone while both stages are showing. This selection of the native Kalmia latifolia grows 4 to 5 feet tall and wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 9.
The habit is dense and vigorous, and the size holds it in scale for a foundation bed or a woodland group planting where the big selections would take over.
Zone 4 hardiness is unusual in a mountain laurel and puts this one further north than most of the group survives. The dark evergreen foliage is lightly waved and carries the plant through winter.
It tolerates shade well. Mountain laurel wants acidic, moist, well-drained soil and struggles in heavy clay or alkaline ground. Mulch the shallow roots and keep it evenly moist. Deer leave it alone.
