Squirt holds at 18 to 24 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, small enough to use as an evergreen groundcover under shrubs where the species would grow too large. Leucothoe axillaris Squirt is a selection of a native shrub, growing in part shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 9.
The leathery leaves emerge with a bronze tint, mature to dark green, and turn bronze again through winter. Small white bell-shaped flowers hang along the undersides of the arching branches in spring.
Zone 5 hardiness extends it further north than the straight species, and the compact size makes it easier to place.
Leucothoe wants acidic soil with organic matter and steady moisture, and it struggles in dry ground or hot afternoon sun. Deer leave it alone. Space 2 feet apart for continuous cover.
