Fragrant yellow flowers bloom in early spring, followed by bright red berries on female plants. The aromatic foliage turns a brilliant yellow in autumn and supports Swallowtail butterfly larvae.

Plant spicebush in early spring or fall in well-drained, moist soil with partial to full shade. Space plants 6-12 feet apart. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil consistently moist. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches. Spicebush is dioecious, so plant both male and female plants for fruit production.
