Major Wheeler Trumpet Honeysuckle

American Beauties Native Plants®

Major Wheeler flowers more heavily than any other trumpet honeysuckle and does it without the mildew that plagues the species. Lonicera sempervirens 'Major Wheeler' climbs 3 to 8 feet and spreads 3 to 10 feet in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.

Blazing red trumpet flowers cover the vine from late spring through summer, carried in clusters at the stem tips. Hummingbirds feed at them all season, and the flowers are shaped for exactly that.

Unlike Japanese honeysuckle, this native twines politely and stays where you put it. Give it a trellis, an obelisk, a mailbox post, or a fence panel, and it will also scramble as a groundcover if left untrained.

Red berries follow the flowers and feed songbirds. It handles drought and moderate road salt once established, wants well-drained soil, and deer leave it alone. Cut it back in late winter to keep it dense.

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Plant in average, well-drained soil. Provide a trellis, fence, or support. Space 6–8 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it tolerates moderate drought. Prune lightly after the main flush of bloom in late spring to shape and encourage additional flowering. Unlike Asian honeysuckles, Major Wheeler is not invasive and is safe to use throughout the garden. Fertilize lightly in spring. The large, vivid red and orange tubular flowers are produced over a very long season from late spring through fall and are irresistible to hummingbirds. Largely pest-free and deer resistant.
