Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist to wet, humus-rich soil. Space 3–4 feet apart- royal fern is a large, stately fern that needs room to develop its full size. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch generously.

Care Tips

Water consistently and generously- royal fern naturally grows in moist, boggy woodland and streamside settings and thrives with reliable moisture. It tolerates wet conditions and some standing water. Remove old or tattered fronds in early spring before new growth emerges. Divide large clumps every 5–6 years in spring if desired. No fertilization is generally needed in organically rich, moist soil. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. One of the most majestic native ferns for wet, shaded areas.
