Sourwood

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0). Space 15–25 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch well away from the trunk.

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it tolerates moderate drought. Little pruning is needed- remove dead or crossing branches in late spring. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. The drooping, lily-of-the-valley-like white flowers in summer, vivid scarlet-red fall foliage, and attractive persistent seed capsules make this one of the finest four-season native trees available. Sourwood honey is considered among the finest in the world. Largely pest-free.
