The foliage of this native grass starts green and quickly turns a deep burgundy-red by mid-summer. Airy, reddish-pink flower panicles float above the leaves, creating a red-hued cloud that persists into winter.

Plant Shenandoah Switch Grass in full sun for best color. Space plants 2-3 feet apart. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it is drought-tolerant. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer. Cut back old foliage to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. This grass is adaptable to a variety of soil types but prefers well-drained soil. It is hardy in USDA zones 4-9.
