Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This native penstemon adapts well to lean conditions- avoid rich or wet soils.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established this native species is quite drought tolerant. Deadhead spent flower spikes to tidy the plant. Cut back to the basal foliage rosette in late fall. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. Excellent for pollinators, especially long-tongued bees. The tall spikes of white, foxglove-like tubular flowers are elegant and airy in the early summer border. A beautiful and underused native perennial.
