Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly. Good air circulation is important for mildew prevention.

Care Tips

Water regularly throughout the growing season. Deadhead spent flower clusters to extend bloom and prevent self-seeding of inferior seedlings. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Monitor for powdery mildew- this variety has improved resistance, but good air circulation and avoiding overhead watering still help. Fertilize lightly in spring. The large, rich blue-violet flower heads are exceptionally vivid and fragrant. Highly attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.
