Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 12–15 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Prairie coneflower thrives in lean, dry conditions- avoid rich or wet soils.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous bloom, or leave seed heads for birds. Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. No fertilization needed in lean soil. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. The compact, red-and-yellow drooping ray flowers around the distinctive tall, thimble-like central cone are charming and distinctive in the summer border and excellent for pollinators.
