Gro-Low Fragrant Sumac

Spotswood Greenery

Gro-Low is the native groundcover for a slope you are tired of mowing. It stays 1 to 2 feet tall and spreads 5 to 6 feet, rooting where the stems touch ground, which knits into a bank holding mat that suppresses weeds without any help. Hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8 in full sun to part sun, it covers ground quickly once rooted in, usually filling by the third season.

Fall color is the display. The glossy three part leaves turn a mix of orange, scarlet, and purple, and the show runs late, holding after most of the surrounding planting has gone over. Crushed foliage has a clean citrus scent, which is where the name comes from.

Small yellow flowers open before the leaves in early spring and draw native bees when little else is available. Fuzzy red fruit follows on female plants and is taken by songbirds. It is a larval host for the Red-banded Hairstreak.

It handles drought, salt, and poor dry soil about as well as any woody plant sold, which is why it turns up on highway embankments and parking lot islands. Deer leave it alone. Space plants 4 to 5 feet apart for coverage, and site it where spreading is the point rather than a problem, because it will keep going.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Wonderful

Wonderful

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 6–8 feet apart. Gro-Low fragrant sumac is a low-growing native groundcover shrub excellent for slopes, banks, and areas where other plants struggle. It adapts to poor, dry, and rocky soils and is exceptionally drought tolerant once established. No soil amendment is needed. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball, water well, and mulch lightly.

Care Tips

Minimal maintenance is required. Prune lightly in late winter if needed to control spread. Gro-Low spreads by underground stems to fill in areas over time — excellent for slope stabilization and erosion control. The fragrant spring flowers attract pollinators. Outstanding scarlet-red fall foliage color. Very cold hardy. No regular fertilizing is needed. One of the best native groundcover shrubs for challenging dry, sunny slopes.
