Blackjack Gold carries hundreds of small golden daisies with black cones on a plant that branches into a wide airy cloud rather than a solid block of color. This native selection of Rudbeckia triloba grows 30 to 40 inches tall and 15 to 18 inches wide in full sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8.
Bloom starts in midsummer and runs to frost, longer than most rudbeckias. Bees and butterflies come to the flowers, and goldfinches take the seed through winter if you leave the stems standing.
The plant holds itself upright without staking despite the height, and the fine branching gives it a lighter presence than the big-flowered black eyed Susans.
Rudbeckia triloba is short-lived, usually two or three years, and it persists by self-sowing. In a meadow or naturalized planting that works in your favor. In a tidy bed, expect to pull seedlings. It handles drought, clay, and poor soil once established, and deer leave it alone.
