Clusters of pinkish-white flowers with long curving stamens open in spring, carrying a sweet fragrance noticeable from several feet away. Rhododendron canescens is a native deciduous azalea growing 6 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 9.
Bloom comes before or as the leaves emerge, so the flowers sit on nearly bare stems. The long stamens give them a delicate, spidery look.
Butterflies come to the flowers and songbirds use the shrub for cover.
This is the southeastern counterpart to Pinxterbloom, native from Texas to North Carolina, and it handles heat and humidity better than the northern species. It grows wild in moist woods and along stream edges, needs acidic soil, and takes part shade. It can reach fifteen feet, so give it room.
