Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained to dry soil. Space 24–30 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Carolina lupine (Thermopsis) is a tough native relative of lupine that tolerates heat and drought far better than true lupines.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Carolina lupine has a deep taproot and strongly resents being moved- choose a permanent location. Cut back spent flower spikes after blooming. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. No fertilization needed in lean soil. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. The tall, bright yellow flower spikes in late spring are striking, and the plant is far more durable and long-lived in hot, dry conditions than true lupines.
