Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil, spacing 4–6 feet apart. Dark American arborvitae is a native evergreen conifer with rich, dark green foliage that provides dense screening, windbreaks, and year-round structure. It adapts to a range of soil conditions including wet and clay soils. Dig the planting hole to the same depth as the root ball, water thoroughly, and mulch well.

Care Tips

Minimal pruning is needed beyond shaping young plants in late spring after new growth emerges. Keep soil consistently moist. Arborvitae can suffer from deer browsing in winter — deer repellent or physical protection may be needed in areas with high deer pressure. Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer. A reliable, versatile native evergreen for hedges, screens, and windbreaks.
