Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to moist, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This compact native ironweed tolerates a wide range of soil conditions including clay.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant. Pinch stem tips back once in late spring to encourage a more compact, bushy plant and reduce the need for staking. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring, or leave seed heads through winter for birds. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. The vivid, magenta-purple flower clusters in late summer are outstanding for pollinators, particularly monarchs and swallowtails.
