New York Ironweed

Plant in average to moist, well-drained soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Highly adaptable to clay and wet conditions.

Water regularly after planting; once established it tolerates moderate drought and a wide range of soil conditions. Pinch stem tips back in late spring to encourage a more compact, branching plant and reduce staking needs. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring, or leave seed heads through winter for birds. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. The vivid, intense purple flower clusters in late summer are outstanding for monarchs, swallowtails, and other pollinators.
