Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Set the crown no more than 1–2 inches below the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting. Choose a permanent location- false indigo has a deep taproot and does not transplant well.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Do not transplant or divide- the deep taproot makes division very difficult and the plants are long-lived and resent disturbance. Mark the location as it emerges late in spring. No fertilization needed. Yellow wild indigo produces upright racemes of clear, bright yellow, pea-like flowers in late spring on a bold, shrub-like clump of blue-green foliage. Outstanding for native pollinators. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. An exceptional, long-lived native perennial.
