Northern Sea Oats

Plant in moist to average, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This native grass adapts to a wide range of conditions including shade and clay.

Water regularly after planting; once established it tolerates moderate drought in shade. Cut back to a few inches in early spring before new growth emerges- do not cut back in fall, as the distinctive, oat-like seed heads are highly ornamental through winter. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Allow some self-seeding in naturalistic plantings- it self-seeds freely where conditions suit it. No fertilization needed. Largely pest-free. One of the best ornamental grasses for shaded conditions.
