True fire-engine red flowers cover this shrub in early spring, a saturated red rather than the orange-reds most azaleas produce. Rhododendron Electric Lights™ Red grows 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in part sun to part shade, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 7.

The flowers are lightly fragrant and bloom early, before the leaves emerge.

For most of the last century, gardeners north of Zone 5 could grow an azalea but rarely see it flower, since the plant survived while the buds froze. Northern Lights changed that. Buds hardy to 30 below mean the display arrives every spring, not just after a mild winter. The series has grown to a dozen or so selections in white, pink, orange, red, and yellow, all deciduous, most of them fragrant, and all blooming in mid to late spring after the frost that catches earlier azaleas.

This is a deciduous azalea, so the leaves drop in fall. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, and it takes less sun than most of the series, which suits a woodland edge.

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly.

Care Tips

Plant in full sun to part shade. More sun gives more flowers, and afternoon shade helps in hot summers.
Acidic soil is a must, ideally pH 4.5 to 6.0. Test before planting. In neutral or alkaline soil the leaves yellow between the veins and the plant slowly declines.
Plant in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Swamp azaleas also handle wet ground.
Set the top of the root ball slightly above the surrounding soil, never deeper.
Water deeply through the first two summers and in dry spells after that.
Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep with pine bark or shredded leaves, keeping it back from the stems.
Feed lightly in spring with a fertilizer for acid-loving plants, if at all.
Prune right after flowering. Next year's flower buds form in summer, so later pruning removes them.
Leaves drop in fall, often after turning color, and the shrub is leafless through winter.
Powdery mildew can show up in late summer, especially in shade. It is mostly cosmetic.
Deer browse the flower buds in winter; protect plants where deer are a problem.
