Pure white flowers open from creamy buds and blanket this low evergreen in late spring, so the shrub reads as a drift of snow at peak. Rhododendron 'Girard's Pleasant White' grows 24 to 36 inches tall and 4 to 5 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.
The habit spreads considerably wider than tall, which suits a low hedge, a bank, or a mass planting.
The Girard azaleas were selected for cold hardiness in evergreen types, which is why this one holds to Zone 5 where many evergreen azaleas stop at 6. White reads brightest at dusk and in shadier corners of a bed.
Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.
