Hino Crimson produces one of the densest flower displays of any evergreen azalea, a solid blanket of crimson-red that hides the plant entirely at peak. Rhododendron 'Hino-crimson' grows 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.
Bloom comes in mid-spring on a dense compact plant.
The leaves are unusually small and fine-textured for an azalea, turning bronze-red in cold weather and holding through winter, which gives the shrub a second season.
Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Alkaline ground turns the foliage yellow. Mulch the shallow roots.
