Pairs well with

Karen holds to Zone 4, which puts it further north than nearly any evergreen azalea will survive. Rhododendron 'Karen' carries lavender-pink flowers that resist fading in sun, growing 3 to 4 feet tall and wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.

Bloom comes in mid-spring on a dense, rounded plant.

The small leaves are evergreen and turn bronze-purple in cold weather, holding through winter.

Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Alkaline ground turns the foliage yellow. Mulch the shallow roots. Give it some winter wind protection at the cold end of its range.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) enriched with organic matter. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch generously with shredded bark or pine needles.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently, especially during the first season and dry summer periods. Prune lightly immediately after flowering to preserve next year's flower buds. Fertilize in spring with an acid azalea fertilizer. Avoid alkaline soils and high-pH water. Karen is a compact, low-growing azalea with attractive rosy-lavender flowers and good cold hardiness- a dependable choice for foundation plantings and shaded borders.
