Large trumpet-shaped flowers in orange to red open through summer on a vine that climbs 20 to 30 feet and covers ground just as fast. Campsis radicans is a native perennial vine growing in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.
Hummingbirds work the flowers all season. Few plants match it for drawing them, and the flower shape is built for exactly that.
This is a vigorous plant, which is the thing to plan for before you buy. It climbs by aerial rootlets, spreads by underground runners, and seeds itself, and it will take over a small garden if you let it. Give it a substantial arbor, a fence line, or a spot where spreading is welcome, and plan on cutting it back hard every year.
Trumpet vine handles poor soil, drought, and heat once established, and it flowers most heavily in full sun. Keep it off wood siding and away from foundations, since the rootlets work into gaps.
