Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Space 20–30 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch well away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it tolerates moderate drought. Little pruning is needed- remove dead or crossing branches in late spring after flowering. Avoid heavy pruning, which can introduce canker. Fertilize lightly in spring. The spectacular magenta-pink flowers smother the bare branches in early spring before the leaves emerge- one of the most vivid early spring displays of any native tree. The heart-shaped leaves and attractive seed pods add summer and fall interest. Largely pest-free.
