Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space 15–25 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it tolerates moderate drought. Little pruning is needed- remove dead or crossing branches in late spring after flowering. Fertilize lightly in spring. The distinctive, horizontal branching structure is the most recognizable feature of this native tree and should not be altered with heavy pruning. The creamy-white flower clusters in spring, blue-black berries attractive to birds in summer, and vivid purple-red fall foliage make this an exceptional four-season native tree.
