Plant black walnut saplings in well-drained, fertile soil with full sun exposure. Space trees 40-80 feet apart to accommodate their mature size. Water regularly during the first few years to establish a strong root system, especially in dry periods. Protect young trees from deer and rodents. Prune in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches and to shape the tree. Be aware of juglone toxicity, which can affect nearby plants.
